A hiatal hernia is a condition where part of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm and into the chest cavity. This can cause symptoms such as heartburn, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing.
During a Hernia Hiatal Repair, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope, a thin, flexible instrument with a camera attached. The camera allows the surgeon to view the hernia and surrounding area on a monitor.
The surgeon then uses specialized instruments to reduce the hernia and return the stomach to its normal position below the diaphragm, and may also tighten the opening in the diaphragm to prevent the hernia from recurring.
If the patient has a hiatal hernia with associated gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the surgeon may perform a fundoplication during the procedure. This involves wrapping a portion of the stomach around the esophagus to reinforce the valve that controls the flow of food and acid between the esophagus and stomach, reducing the symptoms of GERD.
Hernia Hiatal Repair is typically performed as a minimally invasive procedure, which means that it involves smaller incisions, less pain, and shorter recovery time compared to traditional open surgery.
